3 Fun Prayer Activities for Kids: How to Teach Kids to Pray

As a Christian mom, one of my greatest desires is to raise godly kids who know how to talk to God for themselves. Prayer is one of the most powerful gifts we can give our children, but sometimes we don’t know where to start. The good news? Teaching kids to pray doesn’t have to be complicated or boring it can be fun, simple, and something they actually look forward to!

Here are three of my favorite fun prayer activities for kids that I’ve used in my own home.

1. Prayer Jar with Prompts

If your child ever says, “I don’t know what to pray,” this is the perfect solution! Write short prompts like:

“Thank You for…”

“Bless my friend…”

“Help me with…”

“God, You are…”

Put them in a jar and let your child pick one before bed or during family devotion time. This is a great way to take the pressure off and give them guidance. For extra fun, let your kids decorate the jar with stickers or markers so it feels special to them.

2. Prayer Walk Adventure

If your kids are full of energy, try a family prayer walk. Take a short walk around your yard or neighborhood and pause at different spots to pray. Thank God for the trees, pray for your neighbors, or ask Him to bless your home. Turn it into a game by seeing who can find something to thank God for first!

This is one of my favorite family prayer ideas because it turns prayer into a movement-filled adventure perfect for little ones who learn best while doing.

3. Prayer Songs & Motions

Another great way to teach kids to pray is through prayer songs with motions. Create a short song that includes thanking God, asking for forgiveness, and requesting help. Add simple hand motions — arms open wide for “thank You,” hands to heart for “forgive me.” Kids love it when prayer feels like play, and this makes it easy for them to remember.

Why These Work

These ideas are not just practical; they are powerful tools for Christian parenting. They make prayer a natural part of life, not just something we do before meals or at church. When you turn prayer into something engaging, you’re helping your kids build a lifelong habit of talking to God.
